The Paramount Pictures film follows the musician’s transformation from shy piano prodigy Reginald Dwight into international superstar Elton John. His most beloved songs back the inspirational story with appearances by Jamie Bell as Elton’s longtime lyricist and writing partner Bernie Taupin, Richard Madden as John Reid, Elton’s first manager and Bryce Dallas Howard as Elton’s mother Sheila Farebrother.
Prominent crystal flourishes by Julian Day set the film’s rousing tempo as each costume signifies a definitive period from the musician’s journey through stardom.
“What they do is elevate and exaggerate an outfit. Let’s say my designs are 110% – Swarovski crystals make them 150%,” commented Day. “Wherever we could find a place for a crystal in this film, we put it there. Swarovski and Rocketman is a perfect partnership.”
Stunning reimaginings of Elton’s most legendary costumes can be seen throughout including a fully-crystallized baseball kit – the iconic costume worn by Elton when performing at his Los Angeles Dodger Stadium concerts in 1975. The design dazzles with 140,000 Swarovski crystals, making it even more fabulous than the original.
At a moment in the film when Elton feels alone, a dramatic ‘Devil’ costume surrounds him with love. The fiery-red jumpsuit blazes with heart-shaped wings, bespoke crystal flames, a headdress and sunglasses featuring 60,000 hand-embellished Swarovski crystals.
Elton’s ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’ album is celebrated with a costume inspired by the Wizard of Oz. The blue suit with crystallized red lapels and ruby slippers symbolize Dorothy, and the fur coat, silver shirt and straw hat characterize each of her companions: the Lion, the Tin Man and the Scarecrow.
During a wild stage performance, an extravagant ‘Elizabeth’ costume bursts onto the screen with crystal and Swarovski Crystal Pearl embellishments; a nod to Elton’s penchant for theatrics.
More than 750 bespoke crystal transfers accent the musician’s outfits, including 91 personalized ‘Elton John’ patches. Elton wears one such patch on a red jumpsuit during a 1970 performance at the Troubadour in Los Angeles – a pivotal moment when he transforms into the rock royalty we know and love.
Finishing touches like crystal shoes, accessories and jewelry add additional rock-star glam while crystal adorned eyewear – a signature Elton John accessory – truly epitomize the musician’s flamboyant style.
