Swarovski uses its brand visibility and voice to shine a light on women’s empowerment and advocate for equality. The Swarovski Business is a signatory to the United Nations’ Women’s Empowerment Principles, which is a set of guiding values for the private sector to empower women in the workplace through training and leadership. ‘The Future is Equal’ campaign is created to communicate our commitment to empowering women and to help Swarovski colleagues and the external industry celebrate diversity. We strive to break down barriers and raise understanding of the root causes of inequality. As a founding member of an international coalition, Business Action for Women, Swarovski commits to advocating for our peers to drive progress for women.
We believe that diversity does not work without inclusion. Often, our unconscious bias can cause conflict when making important business decisions, stifling diversity, impacting recruitment and contributing to staff retention. In 2018, Swarovski partnered with The NeuroLeadership Institute to pilot a digital learning program ‘Breaking Bias’. The pilot project helped to address unconscious bias across our business and enabled Swarovski employees to accept that our initial assumptions and judgements impact decisions, while sharing tools to mitigate this bias.
Women are integral in the jewelry supply chain, working everywhere from mining and manufacturing to artisan crafting and large-scale production. However, the presence of women, and the unique challenges that they face, is not well known – particularly for lower-income women in more precarious and vulnerable work. To address and to inspire industry-wide action, Swarovski partnered with BSR (Business for Social Responsibility) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands to research the challenges and areas of change. This collaborative approach helped deepen insights and will lead to recommendations for how companies can identify, create and implement opportunities for women in jewelry supply chains. This partnership helped Swarovski to call on wider industry support to promote and advance a responsible jewelry industry with equal opportunities for all.
