Swarovski collaborated with award-winning costume designer Gabriella Slade to reimagine the Spice Girls’ 90s looks, generating a sense of zig-a-zig-ah nostalgia with a glittering twist.
Slade’s vision is a dance down memory lane with signature looks opening the show. Embellished versions of Ginger’s ‘Union Jack’ frock, Scary’s animal-print jumpsuit, Baby’s pink mini dress and Sporty’s crop top and track pants created a sense of wonder and delight in the audience as the girls switched between popular ‘blasts from the past’, such as ‘Wannabe’ and ‘Who Do You Think You Are’.
Slade designed looks for every act of the show, creating over 100 crystallized costumes with complementary shoes and accessories. A devoted fan, she worked closely with each of the Spice Girls, considering each singer’s unique personality and ‘spice’ in her creations. Together with her team of skilled artisans, she finalized the ensembles by meticulously adding Swarovski crystals and pearls by hand. The sensational looks added impact and energy to enrich the group’s electric performances.
“It’s an absolute dream job to design for a tour like this, and to be working with such brilliant women as the Spice Girls. The use of Swarovski crystals is integral in designing for a pop show – it really elevates the costumes. You can always tell it’s a Swarovski crystal costume, even from the back of the stadium!” commented Gabriella Slade.
Nadja Swarovski, Member of the Swarovski Executive Board, also highlighted: “We are delighted to collaborate with Gabriella Slade to celebrate the amazing, empowering and iconic spirit of Girl Power for the Spice World tour. With one million Swarovski crystals hand applied to over 100 shimmering costumes for the Spice Girls and their dancers, we are thrilled to help magnify the magic and dazzle of this stellar show.”
The Spice World tour runs from May 24 to June 15, 2019.
