Cantopop Sensation in Swarovski
China’s heavenly queen of Cantopop, Sammi Cheng, has partnered with Swarovski to create incredible costumes for her Touch Mi 2 world tour, kicking off in Hong Kong in late September. Following Cheng’s blockbuster previous tours—Show Mi in 2007, Love Mi in 2009, and Touch Mi in 2014—the excitement around Touch Mi 2 has been building across Asia for over 2 years.
For Touch Mi 2, Swarovski worked with two incredible designers—Feverish jewelry designer Il Jung Lee and Singaporean couturier Vaughn Tan—to craft three extraordinary costumes for Cheng. Embellished with over 150,000 Swarovski crystals, the ensembles add even more shine to Cheng’s ebullient stage presence.
The elephant warrior costume is reminiscent of armor, consisting of a crystal-encrusted bodysuit and headpiece emblazoned with a geometric elephant motif. Topping off the outfit is a floor-grazing detachable skirts embellished with Swarovski crystals.
The animal theme continues with a second costume inspired by the ferocity of a lioness. This bodysuit features thousands of golden crystals and bold crystallized shoulders. Designer Lee said, “I was inspired by the idea of goddesses on stage. The dramatic features, intricate details and detachable nature of the costumes all represent Sammi’s charismatic stage presence and her various stage personas.”
Couturier Vaughn Tan was inspired by Singapore’s skyline. For Cheng Tan crafted a structural lace cage with an array of crystals. The result is delicate balance of hard architectural lines and soft, feminine flowers which echo the dynamic personality of Cheng.
Swarovski continues to support crystal innovation in costume design on stage and on the screen worldwide.
