east meets west
Design Shanghai, Asia's leading international design event, is set to shine bright in 2018 with sparkling exhibitions by Swarovski Crystal Palace, ‘Luminous Reflections’ by Tord Boontje for Swarovski and Atelier Swarovski. Revolutionary lighting fixtures and visionary crystal collaborations will be on display, observing the tradeshow’s mission to explore the synergy between eastern and western design philosophies.
Swarovski’s contributions to the event begin at the Shanghai Exhibition Center’s Classic Design Hall with a Swarovski Crystal Palace showcase presented by Domus Aurea Collection, the brand’s China general agent. On display are designs created in collaboration with Fredrikson Stallard, Yves Behar, Vincent Van Duysen and Diller Scofidio + Renfro. Lead-free Advanced Crystal components and the latest LEDs offer an element of sustainability, updating these iconic and popular designs with the latest lighting industry technologies.
Acting as a creative platform to inspire innovation for over 16 years, Swarovski Crystal Palace uses the emotive medium of cut crystal to produce signature fixtures in collaboration with visionary talents. Every design celebrates and reinterprets the rich traditions of the chandelier while striving to push crystal to new heights of fascination and form.
Within the exhibition center’s Collectible Hall lives another offering from Swarovski Crystal Palace, Tord Boontje’s Luminous Reflections. The innovative collection consists of three crystal lighting components – Arc, Swirl and Circle – and four lighting designs – Luminous Bough, Lustrous Aura, Shimmering Jewel and Radiant Light. Featuring organically inspired elements that mimic the effects of sunlight on water, each fixture produces gentle and pure lighting effects through smooth, rippled surfaces.
Luminous Reflections originally debuted during London Design Festival – one of the world’s most anticipated gatherings of cutting-edge design, innovation and creativity. Made with non-faceted materials, Boontje’s lighting collection reinterprets crystal, providing a new direction for Swarovski whose long-standing expertise is precision cutting.
In one last showcase of crystal innovation, Atelier Swarovski illuminates the Luxury Tent with an exhibition of home décor pieces. Each design displays a strong focus on harmonizing crystal with mixed materials and are made in collaboration with renowned talents including Studio Brynjar and Veronika, Barbara Barry, Andre Kikoski, Aldo Bakker and Tomás Alonso. Atelier Swarovski’s home décor range premiered in 2016 and seeks to celebrate the art of bringing light into the home with functional and decorative table-top objects.
Design Shanghai will run from March 14 – 17, 2018 at the Shanghai Exhibition Centre.
