The Head of Controlling will lead the controlling function in China by advising and challenging the Market Cluster Managing Directors all along the Controlling Process (Plan–Report–Analyze–Decision Support) to achieve the best financial performance.

In detail:
The Jobholder has a comprehensive “big-picture” understanding of the business from both a financial and commercial perspective and acts as the trusted co-pilot and financial advisor to the Market Cluster Managing Directors, directly reporting to the Managing Director Business Services.

The Jobholder accompanies the respective Market Cluster all along the Controlling Process (Plan–Report–Analyze–Decision Support), ensuring clear goal setting, monitoring and analyzing actual financial performance, as well as generating actionable insights and proposed measures, to ensure financial targets are met. The Jobholder adopts a proactive mindset in foreseeing and highlighting future developments, identifying gaps, improvement opportunities and risks to drive maximum profitability and recommending solutions from a financial perspective. The Jobholder identifies key business drivers and defines requirements in regards to reporting and controlling processes towards respective operational units. The Jobholder is the main point of contact towards the respective Market Cluster for any Controlling topics and acts as a liaison to the respective Businesses and Functions for all Planning & Forecasting related tasks. The Jobholder works in a networked organization and leverages/contracts within Global Business Services (Hub, Spokes, CoEs) for transactional and standardized procedures and F&A/CGB Functional Controlling teams for ad-hoc/complex, deep-dive analysis on specific topics.

Market Cluster Controlling activities:

  • Act as co-pilot / financial advisor to the Market Cluster Managing Directors and all relevant stakeholders, accompanying the respective Market Cluster all along the Controlling Process (Plan–Report–Analyze–Decision Support), by setting clear financial targets, providing holistic performance reporting across Market Cluster value drivers, ensuring transparency and overview of actual financial performance vs target, proactively initiating root cause analysis of relevant deviations and based on this fact-base, advising, challenging and driving decision-making across the Market Cluster.

Plan

  • Define Market Cluster business priorities, in co-operation with the Market Cluster Managing Directors, and ensure these priorities match to the overall central strategies, targets and budget from a financial perspective.
  • Responsible for defining ambitious, but realistic, financial targets for the Market Cluster and ensuring that these are translated into annual budgets, updated through quarterly forecasts and high-level operational metrics for relevant teams in the Market Cluster.
  • Highlight, evaluate and prioritize future financial trends/developments and opportunities, which will impact the Market Cluster’s P&L.
  • Maintain effective control policies for the safeguarding of cash and other assets and for appropriate allocation of corporate financial resources.
  • Advise Market Cluster Management on any changing regulations and policies affecting the Cluster’s financial performance, define local impact of such change, and ensure that these changes are embedded, implemented and followed in day-to-day procedures (e.g. expense & travel policy).
  • Collaborate and build trusted relationships with defined stakeholders, like Central controlling, etc., to maximize financial optimization actions/measures.

Report

  • Accountable for defining requirements for insightful consolidated end-to-end performance report for the Market Cluster, as well as drill down expert oriented reporting in specific functional areas, providing transparency on performance vs targets on key value drivers – the standard reporting is delivered via Global Business Services Hub and Spokes (GBS).
  • Ensure recurring reporting is continuously refined, meaning challenging and translating business requirements and KPIs and address needs in respective committees.
  • If needed support GBS Hub and Spokes to ensure timely and consistent delivery of Market Cluster performance reporting to all relevant stakeholders.
  • Deliver finance updates and analysis at relevant Market Cluster management business review meetings to ensure transparency on performance and interventions.

Analyze & Decision Support

  • Based on standardized performance reporting, interpret data and enrich Hub-produced cash flow reporting with financial and business analysis (incl. external competitor and market benchmarking). Proactively initiate business critical financial analysis to optimize business opportunities (i.e. identify cost savings and topline improvement potentials), mitigate risks, derive actionable measures, and bring these recommendations to the relevant Market Cluster decision-makers to trigger and ensure corrective action is taken.
    • Leverage central Functional Controlling and GBS Hub and Spokes teams to delegate specific deep-dive analysis or topics (e.g. variance / root cause analysis of deviations) in a defined Client Contractor Relationship.
    • Analyze Market Cluster profitability – provide insightful comments on discount development/trends, financial impact of liquidation deals / multibrand mark ups, and validate the cost-benefit analysis (ROI calculation) of specific retail incentives, etc.
    • Analyze the financial impact on P&L of ageing of inventory, inventory in retail vs. warehouse, valuation adjustment current and FC.
  • Advise the Market Cluster in make-or-buy decisions in all areas of relevance.
  • Ensure accountability for budget/forecast target fulfillment and corrective actions on monthly and quarterly basis by setting up and orchestrating business review meetings, closely collaborating with all other Controlling teams responsible for the consolidated financial planning and performance reporting. Accountable for decision making during the business review process to leverage identified opportunities and mitigate/manage risks.
  • Accountable for independently scoping critical finance-driven Market Cluster business projects, ensuring stakeholder support, resources and on-time delivery, to ensure cost optimization and efficiency gains.
  • Manage an active, on-going dialogue with the Market Cluster Managing Directors and their teams regarding all commercial/financial aspects affecting the profitability of the Cluster.
  • Accountable for defining and continuously refining cost contingency plans for the Market Cluster, in collaboration with the central Functional Controlling teams specialized in cost management.
  • Ensure that all Market Cluster investment decisions are in line with the overall strategy, investment portfolio and that priorities are set in the best financial interest of the company.
    • Review the Critical Store List and SEPs’ performance analysis and recommendation.

Leadership

  • Part of the Cluster CGB Management Team and F&A Management Team
  • Coach, inspire and lead the local controlling team from a functional perspective, providing input for qualitative and quantitative targets, ensuring measurement, constructive feedback and bi-annual performance dialogues
  • Actively contribute to the Controllers’ community

    In addition, Jobholder will also:

  • Be an active member in the Transformation engine, including change management regarding the new business model, and act as ambassador for the local Market Cluster.
  • Support HR in administering compensation and rewards to employees regarding Retail Bonus & Executive Bonus for District Managers and Regional Executives.
  • Maintain knowledge of all value flows and local impacts on changes in the value flow.
  • Collaborate with GBS Hub and Spokes team, to focus on the end result.
