Swarovski is a brand with a largely female consumer base, and with a workforce which is 77% female, our company is well placed to champion women, from those who craft our products to those who wear them. Swarovski aims to use its voice to shine a light on women’s empowerment, to advocate for equality and to support important change within the business, through our partners and in the wider industry.
Swarovski is a signatory to the UN Women’s Empowerment Principles, a set of guiding values for the private sector to empower women in the workplace through training and leadership. As a founding member of an international coalition – Business Action for Women – Swarovski also commits to advocating for our peers to drive progress for women.
We are all challenged by unconscious bias when making important business decisions. For this reason, Swarovski has partnered with The NeuroLeadership Institute to offer a digital learning program, Breaking Bias. The initiative enables Swarovski employees to explore how their unconscious assumptions and judgements can impact decisions, and shares tools to mitigate this bias. Swarovski has committed to training 500 employees by the end of 2020, with a greater ambition of training 2,000 by the end of 2023.
Women in Jewelry
Women are integral in the jewelry supply chain, working everywhere from mining and manufacturing to artisan crafting and large-scale production. However, the unique challenges that they face are not well known – particularly for lower-income women in more vulnerable work. To inspire industry-wide action, Swarovski partnered with BSR (Business for Social Responsibility) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands to research the challenges and areas of change. This collaborative approach provided deep insights and will lead to recommendations for how companies can identify, create and implement opportunities for women in jewelry supply chains. The partnership helped Swarovski to call on wider industry support to promote and advance a responsible jewelry industry with equal opportunities for all.
As part of its continuous effort to support fair treatment of women in its supply chain globally, Swarovski has also joined BSR’s HERproject, a collaborative initiative that strives to empower low-income women working in global supply chains. Since its launch in 2007, HERproject has worked in more than 700 workplaces across 14 countries and has increased the wellbeing, confidence and economic potential of more than 800,000 women. Looking forward, we hope to build upon our Responsible Sourcing Initiative with further social impact projects that aim to unlock the full potential of women.
Launched in 2017, Swarovski’s Positive Production Program focuses on sustainable methods that benefit the planet and the wellbeing of our people. As most of Swarovski’s crafters are female, we have added a gender lens to this program to ensure that we are considering how it impacts women. Consultations and surveys, named Listening Projects, have been conducted with employees and local organizations to highlight localized equality needs around access to health and financial services as well as context-based social norms. From these consultations we are exploring potential solutions Swarovski could offer to help advance equality.
Equality, Diversity & Inclusion
Pursuing greater equality as a business provides an opportunity to recruit the best talent, improve performance and be more innovative. And we aim to embed diversity and inclusion across the business. To achieve this, we have implemented best practice guidelines for recruiting talent, we promote a healthy work-life balance, equal access to career development opportunities and the option of flexible working arrangements. Employee resource groups have been established to foster connections and drive ambition by leveraging the benefits of peer mentorship. In Austria, our networks are helping to raise the profile of diversity and support colleagues through a working parents’ initiative, career opportunities for women and by promoting women in engineering.
Mentoring & Leadership
Swarovski's mentoring and leadership programs help to accelerate change and create a more diverse and inclusive leadership. Our award-winning mentoring program provides a platform of support, career progression and development for mentees and mentors alike. Meanwhile, our leadership programs offer employees from all backgrounds the opportunity to learn and develop skills and encourage growth within our business. Beyond these formal programs we offer other development programs and digital learning to ensure our valued talent can continue their professional growth and achieve their ambitions.
