At the time of its launch, the world was changing rapidly, and accessories were coming into their own. “Our lifestyles were becoming faster, women were traveling extensively,” explains Creative Director Rosemarie Le Gallais. “One of the best ways for a woman to be glamorous and individual in such a fast-paced existence is through accessories.” For Swarovski, that meant embracing a new kind of luxury, one concerned with giving women the ease, confidence, and freedom to be herself, or become whoever she dreams of being.
Named for Swarovski’s founder, the line highlighted Daniel Swarovski’s own links to Paris, the world’s fashion capital. Early on in the Swarovski story, a visit to Paris’s World Exhibition of 1900 led to new clients for the company, and new inspiration for Daniel himself. Before long, the city’s top ateliers were using Swarovski crystals in their couture, such as Chanel, Balenciaga and Dior.
Fast forward to 1989, and the team behind Daniel Swarovski Paris renewed that significant link to couture. The driving force behind the line was an impulse towards constant creativity, both artistic and technical. With the aim of changing global perspectives of cut crystal, the atelier found new creative expressions by challenging conventions of color, form and scale, translucence and texture.
One major Swarovski innovation was Crystal Mesh, a groundbreaking method of turning crystal into a fabric that moves fluidly, like cascades of light. The team at Daniel Swarovski Paris used Crystal Mesh on handbags and bracelets to create patterns, stripes, graphics and more. Crystal Mesh was followed by Crystal Fur, which took the technique to new levels by clustering many crystals onto chain mail, creating an effect that resembles the tactile texture of fur. Pearl Mesh, inspired by Le Gallais’ own love of the soft sheen of velvet, was developed with the technical teams at Wattens. The pearlized mesh, composed of smooth, unfaceted crystal cabochons, made its debut in Daniel Swarovski Paris collections on handbags and jewelry pieces.
The Daniel Swarovski collection, alive with inventiveness and originality, reached across categories and design disciplines, bringing jewelry, handbags, sunglasses, gloves, watches, body ornaments, fashion and design objects together in a spirit of couture, fantasy and refinement.
