Crystal is the ideal creative ingredient for a designer like Vauthier. Obsessed by craftsmanship in the grand tradition of haute couture, his work explores the possibilities of artisanal construction and detailing, with a particular focus on the potential for customization and bespoke treatments. Swarovski crystals and pearls in a variety of cuts, colors and finishes have lent an additional level of glamour to Vauthier’s couture collections, characterized often by their asymmetric silhouettes and daring cut-out details.
Having earned his stripes as a talented and technically skilled designer working at Jean Paul Gaultier and Thierry Mugler, Vauthier opened his own house in 2009 and started working with Swarovski in 2012. In the first five years of the partnership, the designer used more than 1.7 million Swarovski crystals to create almost 100 crystallized haute couture looks. Crystal is used alongside traditional couture techniques such as savoir faire embroidery by Maison Lesage and feather embellishment by Maison Lemarié.
To celebrate the first ten seasons of the Swarovski collaboration, Vauthier designed a special crystal-embellished look worn by top model Bella Hadid in his Spring/Summer 2017 show. The one-shoulder dress, made with 10,500 Swarovski crystals, was a prime example of the possibilities of this partnership.
Vauthier’s creations have proven to be popular with a certain kind of bold and chic woman, who wants to turn heads. In 2019, Rihanna chose a glamorous Alexandre Vauthier gown embellished with Swarovski crystals to wear at New York Fashion Week. The bespoke mint green dress featured 220,000 Swarovski crystals in Chrysolite – perfectly illustrating how Vauthier uses crystal to accentuate or heighten the natural curves of the female form. “I've always been working on how light affects a woman's body, her shape and curves,” explained the designer.
Across the years of collaboration between Alexandre Vauthier and Swarovski, opulent crystal detailing has made any woman who wears his pieces feel like a shining star.
