Barnes took his inspiration for the costumes from all over the world, perfectly capturing the fictional and fantastical aesthetic of the city of Agrabah and its characters. He explained, “We decided to look at all those exotic countries and cultures which collided to trade along the Silk Road, such as Morocco, India, Russia and the Middle East. Our wish was that it would appeal to the exotic in all of us.” The remarkable result is over 350 individually painted costumes embellished with sparkling Swarovski crystals in a spectrum of shades including Peach, Aurora Borealis and Light Turquoise. Prince Ali’s cape alone shimmers with 3,227 iridescent stones and around 1,500 crystals adorn each individual dancer’s trousers in the spectacular tap-dancing finale to Friend Like Me.
For Gregg Barnes, Swarovski crystals represent the essence of luxury and quality. He commented: “It has been such a pleasure to collaborate with Swarovski as we developed the costumes for Aladdin, helping us to conjure the magical, vibrant world of Agrabah. The Swarovski crystals are one of the special ingredients which light up the stage and make the show so spectacular.”
