The Conservation Couture exhibit, held in the Cupola at the V&A usually closed to the public, featured masks created by the globe’s most notorious designers, including Prabal Gurung, Chloé, and Sabyasachi among others. Some of the masks made by fashion houses such as Jimmy Choo and Matthew Williamson were adorned with Swarovski crystal for dramatic effect. The launch of the V&A exhibition included a star-studded affair, hosted by HRH Princess Eugenie of York, Nicholas Coleridge and Ruth Powys.
English milliner Lara Jensen utilized hundreds of impactful Swarovski crystals to create a stunning snow leopard mask, titled Ice & Snow for the event. “I enjoyed creating a playful piece that would reflect the spirit of the animal playing in the snow drifts of its natural environment, rather than portraying its ferocious side, that many may first think of,” states Jensen of her inspiration. “The hundreds of Swarovski crystals reflect on the beauty and precious nature of this endangered species.”
The Animal Ball is a celebration drawn from the inspirations of Truman Capote’s 1966 Black & White Dance and French Vogue’s 90th Birthday in 2010, and aims to raise funds for a series of animal conservation charities including Elephant Family, The Aspinall Foundation, Space for Giants and Lion Guardians. Last held in 2013, this year’s event promises to gain even more awareness and support for these important causes.
